Soft Contact Deformer for Houdini

Sunday, March 9th, 2008 | General

This is a digital asset i developed in Houdini, based on pixar’s paper “Acting with contact in Ratatouille” to be found at graphics.pixar.com

It’s a geometry operator that simulates contact between a soft surface, e.g. a character with other objects. The area around the collision is deformed using an animator-controlled curve. It also supports history based effects so the deformation can be ’sticky’.

Here’s a quick demo

This is a more detailed explanation.
I had some problems with the sound recording in this one, volume is pretty low and i sound like an alien at some points… that’s not me, it’s the recording ;-)

Cool stuff, thanks for sharing.
Here is the challenge: would be great to have two way interaction as well :)

Hey guys, thanks for your comments.

For those of you asking for the OTL, i might release it in the future, just give me some more time.

Two-way interaction is definitely something i want to look into!

Brilliant work! I’d love to see some character animation tests with this, not to mention have a look under the hood. Please let the community know via odforce or the SESI list if/when you decide to release the OTL.

Cheers

Hi Kai,
really nice one!
Would be interesting to add springs to get some jiggle and nonlinear motions when the deformed mesh returns to the original pose…

Schöne Grüße,
Kai

Hi Kai, ;)

i was thinking about implementing this, no problem in houdini :) maybe a delay could be mapped to the falloff distance as well, so the spring effect progresses along the bulge area

gruss zurück,
Kai

Yes, this is awesome. Waiting patiently to see the two way mesh deformation :) It would be great to model organic forms this way in real time…

Great work here Aearon. I was looking to do a similar deformer in maya but don’t know where to start. If you’re familiar with maya, then would a pointOnMeshInfo node along with a network of utility nodes yield me something similar? It would be great if you could share the houdini file sometime!
